Nebraska Church Celebrates 125th Anniversary
WAHOO, NE (August 22, 2001) - Swedeburg Covenant Church celebrated its125th anniversary this past Sunday (August 19) with a worship service attended by more than 100 people. A community barbecue drew about 250 people, according to pastor Richard Olson."It exceeded our expectations," said Olson, who has served as pastor at Swedeburg Covenant for nearly five years. "We average about 40 (for worship) and we more than doubled that, so that was a pleasant surprise. Ken Carlson (Midwest Conference superintendent) brought a great message and really challenged us. And we had a beautiful day, in the upper 70s with no wind, which is really unusual in Nebraska for this time of year. God was very good to us."
Swedeburg Covenant was originally named Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Mission Church, Fridhem ("House of Peace"). The church was officially organized August 30, 1876, at the farm of John Martinson with 53 charter members, according to church records.
