Illinois Man Wins Annual Covenant Point Triathlon

IRON RIVER, MI (August 9, 2001) - Dave Strom of Hinsdale Covenant Church in Hinsdale, Illinois, recently won the annual Covenant Point Benefit Triathlon.

This year's event is expected to raise more than $8,000 to help make the Central Conference camp more handicapped accessible, according to camp Executive Director Chuck Frasier.

Winner of Triathlon Strom completed the half-mile swim, 25-mile bike ride and 10 kilometer (6.3-mile) course in 2 hours, 26 minutes, 54 seconds. Strom placed second in last year's event. The accompanying photo shows Kim Spranger and Strom as they completed the biking segment in preparation for the last leg of the event - the run.

Frasier's wife, Jane, swam the opening leg and two previous Covenant Point staff members, Mat Klemp and Sarah Hook, biked and ran as a three-member team to place second overall. Current staffers Anja Peterson, David Frisk and Megan Moberly teamed up for third place, while Tim Thomas of Community Covenant Church in Carlshend, Michigan, placed second in the individual competition and fourth overall. There were 14 individuals and 3 teams in the 2001 event.

Individuals were eligible to compete at Covenant Point by virtue of raising $500 or more in pledges. Teams were asked to raise at least $1,000. Leland Jackson of Iron River, Michigan, a multiple medal winner in a recent Special Olympics competition, was the starter for this year's triathlon.
