Church Newsletters Are Important Source of News Leads

CHICAGO, IL (August 3, 2001) - More than 130 Evangelical Covenant churches have added the Department of Communication to their church newsletter mailing lists as part of an effort to increase the flow of local church news and information as part of the daily Covenant online news report.

"It is encouraging to see how God is working through all of our churches, conference ministries and other groups and associations," said Don Meyer, the department's executive minister. "We would like to see even more churches participate in the newsletter program."

The newsletters provide leads for potential stories, Meyer explained. "Our staff can develop the stories if we know something is happening," he said. "Some churches no doubt have wondered why a particular church or ministry is featured in the news report, but not their church. Most often, it is because that church has not added us to their mailing list.

"We are interested in all kinds of news - from youth group summer programs and community outreach efforts to short-term mission programs, expansions of facilities and new ministry efforts," Meyer continued. "It is through the sharing of this information that we are better connected as a church family and enhance our sense of Covenant identity." News items also provide leads for stories for use in The Covenant Companion.

Meyer also encourages suggestions for improvement to the online news report, including recommendations of the kinds of stories and information that online readers find of greatest interest or usefulness. Comments should be directed to newsdesk@covchurch.org.
