North Park Readies for Move into New Brandel Library

CHICAGO, IL (July 26, 2001) - The $18 million Paul W. and Bernice P. Brandel Library at North Park University will be finished on schedule, according to the project superintendent, with books already in place in some areas of the facility.

Bob Dziewiontkoski, project superintendent for general contractor W.B. Olson, Inc., of Northbrook, Illinois, said construction should be completed by August 4, allowing North Park to begin moving most of its books and other library materials to the new site beginning August 6 - well before students begin classes August 27. The library will be dedicated at 3:30 p.m. October 5 as part of Homecoming festivities at the university.

The move from the current Wallgren Library to the Brandel Library will involve transporting 499,200 items and 221,000 volumes, along with the collections of 1,197 periodicals and journals and 2,640 electronic journals, according to Sonia Bodi, professor of Bibliography and library director.

The new library has 71,000 square feet of space and includes 100 individual study carrels, 13 small group study rooms and five large group study rooms. The new facility will also house the archives of the Evangelical Covenant Church and the Swedish American Historical Association.

The original collection of North Park's library consisted of 493 books and 200 pamphlets, all brought to Chicago when the school moved from Minneapolis, Minnesota. By 1905, the library (located in the Old Main building) had a collection of more than 1,700 books. The current library, named for former college Dean Samuel Wallgren, was completed in 1958.
