Central Conference Group Leaves June 30 for South Africa

CHICAGO, IL (June 28, 2001) - A total of 14 people from all over the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) are traveling to South Africa from June 30 through July 5 as part of a mission trip sponsored by the Central Conference.

Brad Hill, Central Conference mission facilitator, and Covenant missionary Judy Dolan are co-leading the trip, which will include several stops in and around the city of Johannesburg. The South African Chinese Covenant Church, founded in 2000 and pastored by Frank Tuan, invited the group.

Besides Hill and Dolan, members of the team include Doug and Ryan Johnson and Phillip Naffziger, Evangelical Covenant Church of Princeton, Illinois; Dan Radakovich, Beverly Covenant in Chicago; Robert and Novella Larson, Northwest Covenant in Mount Prospect, Illinois; Sharon Gerde, Department of World Mission in Portland, Oregon; Betty Clower, Church of the Good Shepherd in Plainfield, Illinois; Stephanie Lakomy, Kingsford Covenant in Michigan; Ingrid Forsberg, North Park Covenant Church in Chicago; Rebecca Busenitz, Evangelical Covenant Church of Lafayette, Indiana; and Barbara Hasenjaeger, Antioch Christian Church in Toluca, Illinois.

The team will run various Vacation Bible School programs for area Chinese churches and will share testimonies to congregations around South Africa. They will also take a trip to Kruger National Park.

Tuan, then a pastor for the Taiwan Covenant Church, started the Covenant connections in South Africa. He and his wife, Ada, came to South Africa in 1991 to work with a significant population of those of Indian descent in the country. However, when they discovered a large population of Chinese that were non-Christians, they changed their ministry goals.

So far, the Chinese ministry has been fruitful. The South African Chinese Covenant Church has around 100 people in attendance, said Hill, who hopes the conference can provide a trip for those whose churches are unable to send complete mission teams to a mission work.

"I had recently made a trip to China, so I was interested in reaching the Chinese population," Hill said. "One of the best ways to reach immigrant countries is to reach migrant populations outside of the country and filter the gospel back in (to countries like China)."
