Mound (MN) Church to Celebrate 100th Year
MOUND, MN (June 24, 2001) - Fairview Covenant Church will be celebrating its 100th anniversary with a series of events this fall, beginning with a centennial celebration outdoor worship service and picnic July 15.
Fairview Covenant will have its biggest event for the centennial during the weekend of October 5-7, according to associate pastor Liz Jensen. On October 5, the church will host a dinner and a play that has been written as an historical look at Fairview Covenant Church, which was founded May 25, 1901. Marnie Peterson, a member of the church, wrote the play in honor of the centennial.
On October 6, the church will host an ice cream social, a carriage ride and hymn sing. Paul Erickson, superintendent of the Northwest Conference, will bring the morning message October 7. A reception will be held after the service.
"We've been sending letters out to our mailing list since January," said Jensen. "This seems to be very well received by our current members and friends and it's reminded them of our deep roots as a congregation."
Fairview Covenant Church is located in Mound, a bedroom community of about 10,000 located 20 miles west of Minneapolis. It has an average worship attendance of 30. The pastor of the church is Dennis Pool.
One hundred years ago, an itinerant preacher named Erik August Skogsbergh was a catalyst behind the founding of the church, said
Jensen. Many in the area had met on Skogsbergh Point to listen to different evangelists. The first pastor at Fairview Covenant Church was Emil Larson.
The church began its centennial celebration January 21 with a service of renewal as Jim Sundholm, associate superintendent of the Northwest Conference, led a special prayer service. During the year, the church has included regular historical moments in its worship services and has done some remodeling of the sanctuary in the building, which is the second structure to be situated on the original foundation.
