Phelan, Palau To Address Evening Worship Services
ROSEMONT, IL (June 25, 2001) - North Park Theological Seminary President and Dean Dr. John "Jay" Phelan and nationally known evangelist Luis Palau are the featured speakers highlighting the evening worship sessions during the 116th Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Wednesday through Saturday (June 27-30) at the Holiday Inn O'Hare International.
Phelan, who has been in his position since July 1996, is speaking at the 7 p.m. Wednesday opening worship session. He served as dean of students and assistant professor of biblical literature from 1981-1986 before serving pastorates in Pompano Beach, Florida, and Salina, Kansas. Before returning to the seminary, he was executive director of Covenant Publications. He and wife, Dawn, and two sons are members of Northwest Covenant Church in Mt. Prospect.
Palau is the founder of the Luis Palau Evangelistic Association headquartered in Portland, Oregon. As an evangelist, he has addressed an estimated 14 million people through speaking engagements in 69 countries. He will speak at the 7 p.m. Thursday worship service. During that service, missionary candidates Brian and Kerith Weld will be consecrated. The Welds will work in research and development in Latin America. Eighteen new churches will be welcomed into the denomination at this service, which will be led by those from the Department of World Mission and the Department of Church Growth and Evangelism.
The 7 p.m. Friday worship service will feature the ordination, installation and commissioning of various candidates in Covenant ministry.
