The Holmstad Begins $13 Million in Expansion, Renovation
BATAVIA, IL (June 21, 2001) - A $13 million construction project is under way at The Holmstad, a continuing care retirement community that is part of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Plans call for the addition of two assisted living buildings and renovation of the 128-bed skilled nursing center.
A reception and visiting area to service the new complex will be constructed as part of phase one. The entrance to the skilled nursing center, Michealsen Health Center, will be relocated to create an expansive central lobby and health care reception area linking all health care buildings. A covered front porch with an enclosed courtyard is intended to provide a "homey" welcome. Adding a second elevator will provide improved access to both floors of Michealsen.
While the new entry is being completed, construction will begin on a 31,700-square-foot 28-unit one-story assisted living residence for those with Alzheimer's or related memory limitations. This new level of care will be built adjacent to Michealsen, in the southeastern portion of The Holmstad's 38-acre campus. The building will include three wings offering a selection of alcove and one-bedroom residences clustered according to residents' needs for care. Each neighborhood
will include dining and social areas. Occupancy is projected for autumn 2002.
The final phase of the two-and-a-half-year project will include construction of a 34-unit assisted living residence and renovation and redecorating of Michealsen Health Center.
The campus' two-story sheltered care residence, Colonial House, will be razed to make room for the new assisted living residence. The two-story 19,400-square-foot building will provide a selection of alcove, one-bedroom and two-bedroom residences. Each will be complete with a dining area and kitchenette with sink, refrigerator and microwave.
Michealsen will be renovated and redecorated to create larger rooms and a residential rather than a clinical atmosphere. Capacity will be decreased from 128 beds to 99, consisting of 17 private and 41 semiprivate rooms. The decrease in capacity will also provide space for new dining areas for each service neighborhood, more social and activity space and a new chapel. When complete, the skilled nursing center will offer second floor service neighborhoods devoted to late-stage dementia and hospice care. The first floor will be reserved for short-term and rehabilitative care.
"Retirees move to The Holmstad to enjoy an active lifestyle, a lifestyle that comes with the assurance of knowing that if their needs change, care will be available," says Karen Larson, campus administrator. "Providing two styles of assisted living and moving to a residential rather than a clinical atmosphere in our skilled nursing center reassures residents that any needed
care will be comfortable and familiar."
Nationally accredited, The Holmstad is one of 15 not-for-profit retirement communities administered by Covenant Retirement Communities, Inc., on behalf of the Board of Benevolence. Additional information may be obtained by calling Larson at 630-879-4008.
