Unrest Continues in Bangui Area

BANGUI, CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC (June 18, 2001) - Covenant missionaries are safe following an attack on the home of CAR President Ange Felix Patasse, according to recent reports from missionaries ministering in the Bangui area.

Ken Satterberg, Mark and Dena Thornbloom and son Ben were away on a trip at the time of the attack. Mark reported relative calm in Bangui, although sporadic gunfire can be heard in and around Bangui. A 9 p.m. curfew has been imposed.

Government officials claim to have occupied the home of General Andre Kolingba, who they say led the failed coup. Government forces have been searching for rebel soldiers in an area south of Bangui.

Those working in the area request prayers for peace in Bangui and protection for their homes.
