Palmberg Greets Delegates to Swedish Church Annual Meeting
STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (June 15, 2001) - Glenn R. Palmberg, president of the Evangelical Covenant Church, has been attending the annual meeting for the Svenska Missionsforbundet, Sweden - the Covenant Church of Sweden.
"It is much like our meeting with a lot of routine business," said Palmberg, who traveled with wife Sharon to the event. (The Evangelical Covenant Church Annual Meeting will be held June 27-30 in Chicago.)
"Krister Andersson was elected for an additional four-year term by a unanimous voice vote," Palmberg reported. "There was significant discussion regarding the election of two new superintendents. The committee from one of the conferences chose a man, and the executive
board overruled the conference committee and selected a younger woman because they feel the need for more women in leadership - and younger leadership. Both of the newly elected superintendents are women."
Palmberg was scheduled to address delegates of the annual meeting in Sweden. Topics include the importance of U.S.-based denominational relations with churches in other parts of the world, as well as church planting, which has been more difficult in Sweden. The Swedish Covenant Church hopes to grow four or five more churches next year, said Palmberg, who planned to visit U.S. Covenant pastors Lynnae Joy Johnson and Doug and Jodi Fondell, among others.
"Like our annual meeting, the hallway outside the meeting is crowded with delegates discussing all sorts of issues and drinking coffee," said Palmberg in assessing day one of the annual meeting. "The most significant difference I have observed between our annual meeting and the meeting here in Sweden is the amount of debate. They are now discussing the election of board members and people get up before the annual meeting and campaign for their favorite candidate."
