Covenant Youth Honored for Outstanding Achievement

(June 14, 2001) - A number of Covenant young people have been honored in their respective communities, honors that reflect well not only on their local congregations, but also on the Evangelical Covenant Church family as a whole.

The following highlights were gleaned from numerous local church newsletters sent to the Department of Communication in recent days:

  • PLEASANT HILL, CA - Luke Honnette, whose father, Dean, is pastor at Hope Center Covenant Church in Pleasant Hill, was named co-Most Valuable Player of the Diablo Foothill Athletic League (DFAL) in boys volleyball. A senior outside hitter, Honnette set a school record with 47 kills against Campolindo earlier this spring. Besides amassing more than 500 kills, Honnette averaged 17 digs and two blocks per match for College Park. He is also a highly rated club volleyball player in the area, having played in Junior Olympic national tournaments during his prep career.
  • SANTA BARBARA, CA - High school students Noah Bryant and Erik Anderson of Montecito Covenant Church were recently honored by Santa Barbara Round Table Pizza for athletic accomplishments during the past sports season. Bryant of Carpenteria High School, placed third in the boys shot put with a toss of 61 feet, 11 and one-quarter inches during the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) track and field meet in Sacramento June 1-2. During football season, the 6-foot-1, 280-pound junior was an All-Section offensive lineman. Anderson, a senior at San Marcos High School, made the All-CIF Southern Section second team for Division III schools. The middle blocker will attend the University of California at Santa Barbara this fall.
  • OMAHA, NE - Katie Freeman, daughter of pastor Martha Freeman at Community Covenant Church, and her friend, Kelsie Williamson, organized a prom for 50 developmentally challenged young people from Omaha-area high schools. The "Special Friends Prom" at Community Covenant Church received rave reviews from many in the area and was featured in an April 17 article in the Omaha News Herald.
  • STAMBAUGH, MI - Brendon Plowe, a first-team All-Upper Peninsula football and basketball player, Brendon will attend North Park University following an active high school career. Brendon is listed in Who's Who in America and was an honor student while participating at Grace Covenant Church in Stambaugh. He also wrote for his school newspaper, served as a sportscaster for a local radio station and was the owner of his own small business. He has been chosen to travel with Athletes of Good News, a sports mission outreach program, to play for a summer basketball team in Belgium.
  • MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Alissa Anderson, a senior at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, received an Athena Award presented to some of the best and brightest female athletes in the area during a recent luncheon at the Minneapolis Convention Center. She earned 15 varsity letters in high school, making the state meet in cross-country, Nordic skiing and track and field. Alissa, who attends Bethlehem Covenant Church in Minneapolis, helped her team place second in the state cross-country meet and was seventh in her division in the two-mile run at the state track meet.
  • TUCSON, AZ - Shana Brown, a four-year varsity letterman in swimming and soccer from the Evangelical Covenant Church of Tucson, earned a soccer scholarship to Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona, after making second team All-Area. Shana holds the school record in the 100-yard breaststroke in swimming and became the first girl to play varsity football at Santa Rita High School, placekicking and kicking off for the team last fall. Besides being a standout in athletics, Shana is an honor roll student and was an Arizona state finalist in the DECA honors competition for academics. Shana plans to study education in college with hopes of becoming a teacher and coach.
  • De KALB, IL - Colleen Hegberg of Hillcrest Covenant Church won a silver award in the National Scholastic Art competition in Washington, DC, and will be honored in a ceremony later this month. Hegberg, a junior, received a gold key award in a competition at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.
