Trio of Bikers Almost A Third of the Way Home
LAS CRUCES, NM (June 13, 2001) - Three states down and a handful more to go.
Three students - Karl Brorson, Peter Frost and Dan Fernandes - have traveled through California, Arizona and most of New Mexico after 10 days of a 35-day bike trip from coast to coast. They hope to cross the Texas border today.
The trip, which began June 3, is to be completed in July. The trio decided to finish the trip in Brunswick, Georgia after originally planning a finish in Jacksonville, Florida, according to Barbara Frost, Peter's mother.
The three teens attend Wheaton Academy in Wheaton, Illinois. Frost, who attends Faith Covenant Church in Wheaton, and Fernandez recently graduated from high school. Brorson, who attends Naperville Covenant Church, recently finished his sophomore year of high school.
Daily devotions and witnessing are part of the agenda, according to Jon Brorson, Karl's father. He said that the idea of a coast-to-coast bike trip was considered partly because of their involvement with the Wheaton-based Adventures in Student Missions, a non-denominational organization.
According to Mrs. Frost, the trip has involved a series of events that have reflected God's provision. In Phoenix, Arizona, all three riders had flat tires, but a relative in the area assisted them. A day later, a pastor from a Baptist church hosted the teens in Safford, Arizona - the pastor received an email from Mrs. Frost requesting emergency housing. Another parishioner from the Safford church also offered future housing assistance. The three are studying the book of Acts along the way. The challenges they have faced have affirmed for them the truth of those scriptures - that some of the qualities of the early Christian church are still evident today.
The teens have requested continued prayer on their behalf, especially for housing, for strength to complete the trip and for continued growth in their respective spiritual walks and witness.
