Fire Damage Won't Stop Foley's 100th Anniversary Celebration
FOLEY, MN (June 4, 2001) - Maywood Covenant Church will hold its 100-year anniversary celebration July 28-29 as scheduled, despite a church fire in April that left the church building unusable.
"The congregation wanted to wanted to make the statement that the church is not a building," said Pastor Jeff Loewen. "Our theme for the 100th anniversary is Glimpses of Glory. We are certainly experiencing that, along with a strong dose of 'Great is thy faithfulness.'"
The church caught fire April 19 following a lightning strike. The church office and pastor's study were destroyed, with the rest of the building suffering smoke and water damage. The congregation is awaiting final estimates before deciding whether to repair the current building or build a new facility.
The congregation has been meeting in a local Catholic school, where the annual vacation Bible school program will be conducted. "They have been very gracious in opening their arms to us," says Loewen of the school. "Our church has experienced the blessing of seeing God at work through other people from all sorts of backgrounds. The Catholic churches have been particularly kind. I don't know why, but it kind of blows us away."
