Covenanters Reported Safe Following Failed Coup

BANGUI, CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC (May 30, 2001) - Covenant missionaries are safe, but undecided as to what to do after soldiers attacked the home of Central African Republic (CAR) President Ange Felix Patasse last weekend.

According to Reuters news service, the failed coup attempt killed at least a dozen people. Conditions have since quieted down for the 17 people and three guards where Covenanters Mark and Dena Thornbloom reside.

"Things have been pretty quiet," wrote Dena on Tuesday. "We've only heard gunfire a few times in the last couple of hours. For now, the plan is to wait and see how things go tonight and we will get together in the morning to talk again about our options."

Covenanter Keith Gustafson said that the official United States Embassy position is that all U.S. citizens should remain confined to their homes. The coup, which killed seven members of the CAR presidential guard, has failed, according to news reports from the region.
