Minnehaha Breaks Ground in $14 Million Project
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (May 30, 2001) - Approximately 200 people attended a groundbreaking ceremony for a $14 million expansion project at Minnehaha Academy - the largest campaign since the school was founded in 1913.
Minnehaha Academy is sponsored by the Northwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church and has produced nearly 10,000 graduates during its 88-year history.
Construction and renovation will include a new gymnasium, a 600-seat fine arts center and chapel and upgraded classrooms and laboratory facilities on the Upper School campus. The gymnasium is scheduled for completion in January 2002, with the fine arts center and chapel to be finished by the end of next year.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on the historic front lawn of the Upper School. Dr. John Engstrom, Minnehaha Academy president, delivered the welcome and opening remarks. Arlene Anderson, chair of the Minnehaha Board of Education, shared a prayer of thanksgiving followed by the blessing from Conference Supt. Paul Erickson.
Construction of the new facilities is supported by Promise for the Future, a $9 million capital campaign. In less than two years, gifts and pledges from alumni, parents, faculty and friends total more than $7.4 million. Bonds will provide the remainder of the capital. The project will incorporate land that formerly served as Northwest Conference offices.
Minnehaha Academy enrolls more than 1,250 students in grades preschool through 12 on three campuses in Minneapolis and Bloomington, including 525 in the Upper School. Students come from 50 different communities throughout the metropolitan area.
