Biwabik Church Breaks Ground for New Facility

BIWABIK, MN (May 29, 2001) - Nearly three years after having their church burned down, the congregation at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Biwabik celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony for a new facility May 20.

Church Chair Darrel Bliss, building chairman James Underhill, Pastor Jeffrey R. Jones and Biwabik Mayor Steven Bradach took part in the ceremony. Jones said that construction has begun and that the walls, roof, heated floor, siding, windows and doors are to be completed this fall.

On August 23, 1998, a burglar ransacking the church started a fire that damaged the building. Since that time the church has been meeting in a senior citizens center. The fire created the impetus that the small congregation of 60 people needed to move to a larger and more visible site. The congregation voted to move to a new site January 28 and the project has progressed this spring leading up to the groundbreaking.

To learn more about the project and the kinds of assistance that will be helpful, please call Jones at 218-865-6216 or email him at nahum17@cpinternet.com. Photographs of the ceremony may be found by visiting the church web site.
