NPU Freshman Named CCIW Player of the Year

CHICAGO, IL (May 25, 2001) - North Park University freshman Kim Walker has been named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Player of the Year for the 2001 season after ranking among conference leaders in nearly every statistical category.

Walker, a Chicago resident from Good Counsel High School, ranked 10th in the conference in batting average (.354) and her three doubles and two home runs placed her third in both categories. As a pitcher, she was second in the CCIW with 62 innings pitched, third in strikeouts with 26, and fourth with a 1.58 earned run average with a 1.58 ERA and four wins.

Walker paced the Vikings in nearly every statistical category while leading North Park to a 19-14-2 mark, 5-9 in the CCIW. She led the team in batting average (.372), hits (42), runs (25), doubles (8), home runs (5), slugging percentage (.611), on-base percentage (.421) and runs batted in (27). On the mound, Walker led the North Park pitching staff in wins (15), ERA (1.75), strikeouts (68), innings pitched (148.1), opponent's batting average allowed (.215), and appearances (25).

North Park first baseman Alex Urgo was also named to the All-CCIW team. Urgo batted .333 with four doubles in conference play. Overall, Urgo hit .312 with seven doubles. Urgo also provided the Vikings with stellar defense at first base, posting a .977 fielding average for the year.
