Search Begins for New Covenant Harbor Director
LAKE GENEVA, WI (May 24, 2001) - Peter J. Heintzelman is resigning as executive director of Covenant Harbor Bible Camp (CHBC) at the end of August after 22 years of camping ministry in the Central Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
Heintzelman, has served at Covenant Harbor, located in Lake Geneva, since June 1979. He begins work for Covenant Trust Company (based in Chicago) as an estate planning officer for the
Central Conference, effective September 1.
As executive director, Heintzelman oversees ministries at CHBC, the Geneva Bay Centre and Snake Road Adventure Center. In recent years, his efforts have helped the camp pay off a debt of $2.7 million that threatened to close operations a decade earlier. He also helped start new scholarship programs, Golf for Kids and Bike for Kids, helping more than 100 children per year attend camp.
"We have really grown to a year-round, multifaceted conference center," said Heintzelman. "Our camper and guest days (of stay) have gone from 4,000 per year to just under 40,000 per year. When I came, we had two full-time staff and two part-time staff. Now, we have a combined 50 full-time and part-time staff.
"I'm glad that we have paid off our debt," he continued. "But what I feel really good about is that since we started Golf for Kids, we've been able to open up the camp to kids in the city that we hadn't been serving. We're reaching a lot more kids, a lot of different types of kids, and I'm proud of that."
Ministry at Covenant Harbor has been a family affair for the Heintzelmans. Wife Pat has served
in many capacities at Covenant Harbor, Geneva Bay Centre. His three daughters (Caroline, Katie, and Gretchen) have worked on staff at Covenant Harbor. Brother Tim, a Covenant pastor in Ohio, has served on staff at the camp. Another brother, Jon, has been heavily involved on camp boards.
Covenant Harbor Bible Camp has been in existence since 1947 and serves 18,000 people annually via 500 different camp, group and church events. Geneva Bay Centre is the largest elderhostel site in the Midwest, serving more than 1,000 people annually.
The camp board has begun a search process for a new executive director. For more information about the camp or the executive director search process, contact CHBC by telephone at 262-248-3600 or by email at office@covenantharbor.org. The camp web site is www.covenantharbor.org.
