Jeffrey A. Nelson Receives Zenos Hawkinson Award
CHICAGO, IL (May 17, 2001) - Jeffrey A. Nelson of Elmhurst received the 2001 Zenos Hawkinson Award for Teaching and Campus Leadership during a recent honors convocation at North Park University (NPU).Nelson, an associate professor of biology at the university since 1998, was nominated for the award by faculty colleagues and graduating seniors, said Daniel de Roulet, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Nelson, who received his undergraduate education from North Park, earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
Before returning to his alma mater to teach, Nelson taught in the section for infectious disease at Chicago's Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center and Rush Medical College. He also completed his residency there.
The Zenos Hawkinson Award is presented annually to one professor based on six criteria:
- Nurturing of students intellectually, emotionally and spiritually
- Preparation, organization and expertise in teaching
- Exhibiting the importance of Christian faith in every aspect of life
- Being available to students, connecting to them, respecting them
- Demonstrating leadership in promoting cultural diversity and women's rights
- Exhibiting a passion for learning
