First Covenant of Moline Celebrates 125th Anniversary
MOLINE, IL (May 15, 2001) - About 200 people attended a May 11 banquet celebrating
the 125th anniversary of First Covenant Church of Moline.
James Hawkinson, interim pastor at Bethany Covenant Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and executive director emeritus for Covenant Publications, was the keynote speaker for the event. He spoke about "Memory and Challenge" using I Peter 2:1-10 as a scriptural text.
First Covenant Church began as the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Gustav Adolphus Church. The congregation held an organizational meeting February 28, 1876, before beginning worship services as The Evangelical Gustav Adolphus Church in Moline.
There were 37 charter members at the church, which dedicated its first building July 9, 1876. The congregation voted to request membership in the Swedish Evangelical Mission Covenant Church of America on July 28, 1890. In 1968, First Covenant Church of Moline dedicated its present
church building. About 150 people attend the church, according to Pastor John Kepler.
On June 3, the church will host a Confirmation Reunion Sunday worship service, recognizing all those that were confirmed at First Covenant. A brunch will follow the worship service and the church is asking that those interested in participating in the brunch make reservations.
For more information on the June 3 worship service and other 125th anniversary events, or to reserve a place at the brunch, call the church office at 309-764-7526.
