Youngster Recovering from Stab Wounds

ANCHORAGE, AK (May 11, 2001) - Eight-year-old Stephen Hansell, who was stabbed at his elementary school Monday, is now recovering at home, according to Phil Axelson, pastor at First Covenant Church.

The youngster was one of four children injured in the incident at Mountain View Elementary School. Hansell was stabbed in a classroom where he and two other students were hiding along with a teacher, according to the Anchorage Daily News. Another child was stabbed outside as students waited in the playground for breakfast. Hansell was cut from his temple to an area near his throat, according to his father, Dwayne.

"They (doctors) did a beautiful job of putting him together," the pastor was quoted as saying in an Associated Press story. "He (Stephen) told his mother he was going to school Monday," joked Axelson, who visted Hansell in the hospital. "His mother was debating with him about that."

A 33-year-old man has been charged.
