Covenant Softball Invitational to Begin July 14
BLOOMINGTON, MN (May 8, 2001) - One of the largest unofficial gatherings of the Evangelical Covenant Church will take place in the Northwest Conference this summer when the 32-team Covenant Invitational softball tournament commences July 14 at Dred Scott Fields in Bloomington.
The Covenant Invitational has been played since 1970, according to tournament director Gabe Gibson. Last year's 12-inch softball tourney drew 26 teams from area Evangelical Covenant churches, mostly from Minnesota. The 2001 event already has an entry from Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. Gibson's Linwood Covenant team lost to Crossroads Covenant Church of Forest Lake, Minnesota, 10-0 in the 2000 finals.
"The Covenant Invitational tournament has always been fun for me," said Gibson, who has played in seven tourneys and took over the direction of the event last year from long-time coordinator Darrell Steen. "It's like a big family gathering." And big it is, drawing hundreds of spectators and participants to last year's event.
Entrants into the Covenant Invitational are guaranteed three 7-inning games for a $125 team fee. After two games, teams are divided into various pools, depending on individual team performance in the opening two contests. It is an open tourney, which means that coed teams are welcome.
