Annual Meeting Registration Material Distributed

CHICAGO, IL (April 23, 2001) - Registration materials for the 116th Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) have been mailed to local churches in preparation for the June 27-30 event at the Holiday Inn O'Hare International in suburban Rosemont, according to Annual Meeting Coordinator Eric Palmquist.

Delegates will have an opportunity to help shape the direction of the church as they vote on the proposed Constitution and Bylaws for the denomination. This year's theme Connecting the Mission reflects the themes outlined in the new governing documents that delegates will be asked to consider.

"Mission has always been central to our life and work, from our earliest days," said Glenn R. Palmberg, ECC president. "As we grow and our world changes, we need to adapt and strengthen the connections through which we reach out to others in Christ's name. At this year's Annual Meeting we will be acting on the revised Constitution and Bylaws that were presented last year-a significant step in advancing our shared mission."

A Wednesday evening worship service will open the Annual Meeting. John E. Phelan Jr., president and dean of North Park Theological Seminary, will be the keynote speaker. Business sessions begin the next morning and continue into Saturday, June 30.

Missionaries Brian and Kerith Weld will be consecrated in a Thursday evening service with internationally known evangelist Luis Palau as the speaker. The ordination and commissioning service for Covenant ministers and staff is scheduled for Friday evening. A total of 19 ministers will be ordained and 13 licensed staff ministers will be commissioned.

Besides voting on the proposed Constitution and Bylaws, delegates also will consider a candidate for executive vice president of the denomination. Donn Engebretson, executive director of the ministry for the denomination, was nominated by the Executive Board for that position.Stan Henderson has been serving as interim vice president. Delegates will also consider David Kersten for the position as executive director of the ministry.

A new conference, currently known as the Midsouth Region, will be presented to delegates for approval. The Midsouth, where the Covenant first began working in 1985, has 16 churches with a combined attendance of 5,300. Garth Bolinder serves as conference developer and will become superintendent if the conference is approved.

Registration is $185 if received before May 11, or $205 if received after May 11. Registration forms can be faxed to Palmquist at 773-783-4366. A discounted housing rate of $97 per night has been arranged for delegates staying at the Holiday Inn. Reservations must be made before May 30 to receive this rate.
