Vikings Triumph Over Millikin
CHICAGO, IL (April 2, 2001) - Junior Peter Morris of Seattle, Washington, pitched eight innings and received support from a 17-hit attack as North Park University (NPU) defeated Millikin University 23-5 Sunday to raise its overall mark to 3-13-1.Dion Rubino had four hits and Dan Gutierrez and Tony Polumbo drove in four runs apiece as the Vikings moved to 2-1 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. Morris, who is from First Covenant Church in Seattle, struck out seven and allowed nine hits to move to 1-1 on the season.
A day earlier, freshman Jeff Hanson tossed a five-hit shutout and Joe Colucci hit a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning as NPU beat Millikin 1-0 in the second game of a doubleheader.
Colucci's third home run of the season was one of just two hits off Millikin's Brian Schnurstein, who struck out seven in the loss. Hanson (1-3), who grew up in Concord, California, and attended Hillside Covenant Church in Walnut Creek, earned his first collegiate win, striking out five and walking none while dropping his team-best earned run average to 2.93.
The Vikings lost the opener 7-1 to Millikin despite three hits and a run batted in by Polumbo.
