Covenanters Not Affected by Japan Quake

HIROSHIMA CITY, JAPAN (March 25, 2001) - No Covenant churches or Covenant missionaries were affected by the earthquake that shook this area Saturday, measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale.

That confirmation comes from David and Ronna Husby, regional coordinators for Asia for the Evangelical Covenant Church. Hiroshima City is located on the western side of the main Japanese island of Honshu - the Japan Covenant churches are located on the eastern side of the island, the Husbys note.

One person is confirmed dead and a dozen more are injured, according to early reports following the disaster. The affected area is approximately 429 miles southwest of Tokyo. Buildings swayed violently and people had trouble standing, according to one Associated Press report. The quake shattered windows, collapsed concrete walls, disrupted telephone service, stopped the trains for a time and temporarily closed the Hiroshima airport while inspections were conducted.
