East Coast Camp Sparked by CHIC Enthusiasm
GLEN SPEY, NY (March 16, 2001) - Not only has CHIC2K made a positive impact on the lives of high school students throughout the Evangelical Covenant Church, one conference in particular has seen the impact of high interest in CHIC at the local level.
Some 500 students and adult leaders from 26 churches gathered earlier this year for the East Coast Winter Retreat in southern New York. Jim Condap, youth pastor of Monadnock Covenant Church in Keene, New Hampshire, said it was the biggest high school event in conference history. Some 40 teens made commitments to Christ and another 200 made
recommitments during the event.
Condap said the "emotional high" from CHIC2K has intensified the level of commitment to Christ on the part of many young people. "We see that kids are being brought to Christ and sticking with it," he said. The Dangerous Living theme of the conference camp challenged teens to take their Christian faith to the edge, while expecting more from a God
who is full of surprises.
P.J. Foltz, a youth ministry teacher at Eastern College in Pennsylvania, and country western singer Jon Brennan were the keynote speakers for the camp. Brennan, who had been a cast member of the MTV television series Los Angeles, traveled to and from the retreat with Monadnock Covenant's youth group and made a decided impression on the teens.
"God answers prayer," said Condap. "They come in the form of worship bands and they come in the form of speakers. The ones we had this year were perfect. Brennan was so good with kids; he was so real. That's what kids are clamoring for."
