North Park Track Team Posts Good Record
CHICAGO, IL (March 16, 2001) - Lacretia Carroll, a sophomore from Peoria, Illinois, placed 12th in the 400-meter preliminaries at the recent Division III indoor track and field nationals at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, turning in a 59.77 performance.Carroll qualified for nationals in the 400 with a time of 57.91 seconds at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin indoor championships at Illinois Wesleyan University February 23, putting her eighth in the rankings before nationals.
Last spring, Carroll qualified for the outdoor nationals at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, and placed second in the 400 at the CCIW meet. Carroll also was second in the 200, fourth in the triple jump and helped the North Park University (NPU) distance medley team to a first-place finish. Carroll also plays for the Vikings in women's volleyball.
"She'll do anything you ask of her and she's really goal-driven," said Kari Nethery-Kluckhohn, NPU track and field and cross country coordinator. "She's set school records in the 200, 400, 600 and the distance medley this year, so she's already had a great year. She's one of the top quarter-milers I've ever coached."
Carroll, who majors in international business, was recruited by current sprints coach Dan Thyreen, who was head coach before Nethery-Kluckhohn took over last season. Carroll was an All-State track and field performer in high school.
North Park freshman Giles Travis of Richton Park, Illinois, qualified provisionally for the indoor nationals in the long jump with a school-record leap of 6.95 meters (22 feet, 9 5/8 inches), but didn't rank among the top 14 that automatically advance to nationals. This winter, he has also tied the school's 200 mark.
North Park's track and field program has 43 members. During the indoor season, North Park finished fifth, a significant improvement from an eighth-place finish last spring in the CCIW meet. The men's team finished seventh.
