Covenant Students Unharmed in School Shooting
SANTEE, CA (March 5, 2001) - Two teens attending Community Covenant Church in El Cajon, California, escaped injury at Santana High School when a 15-year-old student shot and killed two students and injured 13 others Monday morning, Covenant News Service has learned.
According to a spokesperson at Community Covenant, the Santana High students were unharmed, as was a school librarian who also attends the church. A freshman at the high school had begun
shooting at 9:20 a.m. (PST) in a boys' restroom, according to authorities. He was later apprehended by police.
The number of dead and wounded is the largest number in a school shooting since the Columbine High (Colorado) tragedy in April 1999, the Associated Press reported.
Another area church, Mt. Miguel Covenant Church in nearby Spring Valley, has members who are students or adult employees at Santana High. The school, with a student population of 1,900, is located in suburban Santee, a city of nearly 60,000 located about 12 miles from downtown San Diego in the East County.
