Indiana Church Prepares for Second Preview Service
WEST LAFAYETTE, IN (February 13, 2001) - The second of two preview worship services will take place Sunday at Riverside Covenant Church in West Lafayette, Indiana. The first service in January drew 218 individuals.
January's worship service attendance at the University Conference Center doubled expectations, giving the church core group encouragement as they prepared for their second service, said pastor Rick Romeo. Thirty-four adults from the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) of
Lafayette are committed to the church-plant effort.
"The most pleasant surprise was how the service went - we could have never imagined something like this," said Romeo, who previously served nine years as an associate and youth pastor at Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. "The ECC of Lafayette is a solid parent
church that . . . has given us credibility," he continued. "And people know where the conference center is because of Purdue University and its sports programs (located in West Lafayette). Most of the opponents of Purdue stay at the University Hotel, which is connected to the conference center."
Riverside Covenant originally wanted to find a school building to house preview services. However, the conference center is flexible enough to accommodate a growing congregation and the site is near a major highway. Romeo was encouraged that so many attended the preview
service without a major advertising effort. He hopes that a seeker friendly format and the continued support of the local parent church will continue to bring others to the new church.
