$1.2 Million Family Life Center Dedicated

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (January 6, 2001) - First Evangelical Covenant Church of Grand Rapids, Michigan, came into existence 120 years ago and has been building the Kingdom ever since.

The 500-member congregation recently dedicated a $1.2 million family life center. A celebration weekend culminated a three-year fundraising effort, according to church chair Scott Dennis. Covenanters in the Great Lakes Conference will have the opportunity to see the addition as the church will host the conference annual meeting in April.

Motivational speaker Jerry Jacoby provided the program for the celebration dinner, with Jim Fretheim delivering the message at a special combined worship service. Fretheim had been recently called as senior pastor and officially began his duties January 1. He pastored Bloomington Covenant Church in Minnesota from 1984-2000.

The 13,700-square-foot family life center is a gymnasium that will be used as a multipurpose room for youth events, musicals, additional Sunday school seminars and classes and special events. The church has already been used for pre-school and after-school activities. National Covenant Properties of the Evangelical Covenant Church provided funding for the project.
