Vikings Defeat Concordia, Milwaukee
CHICAGO, IL (November 30, 2000) - North Park University (NPU) erased a 13-6 deficit with 12 straight points midway through the first half to defeat visiting Concordia University 76-57 Wednesday.
Drew Carty scored 14 points and added five rebounds and three assists as the Vikings improved to 3-0. Keith Peterson added 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while a deep bench helped NPU overcome a slow start with a 19-2 run to give the Vikings a 46-29 half-time edge.
Carty, a junior transfer from Winona State University in Minnesota, has helped NPU overcome the loss of last year's starting guards Rick Alspach and Kerry Pates. But Coach Rees Johnson's reserves have been the most pleasant surprise thus far.
Reserve members started NPU's second game against Milwaukee School of Engineering and the Vikings didn't miss a beat, winning by 30 points. On Wednesday, NPU's reserves scored 33 points, led by Byron Pullen and LaRon Kittrell with nine each. As a result, Johnson had the luxury of using nearly his entire roster as 10 Vikings played at least 12 minutes and all 13 who suited up saw action in the first half.
NPU starts three seniors on its front line in Peterson, Robert Berki (nine points) and Brandon Donaldson. Their presence was felt as the Vikings held a 43-30 rebounding edge. The Vikings had 13 steals, four by Jason Collins, and forced 23 Concordia turnovers to help Johnson's squad get numerous easy baskets.
On Saturday (December 2), NPU hosts Wabash in a 7 p.m. non-league contest.
