Retreat Focuses On Urban Church Worship

ATLANTA, GA (November 7, 2000) - ATLANTA (November 7) – Worship in the urban church was the theme of the recent fourth annual Atlanta Urban Leadership Retreat, sponsored by the African-American Ministers Association (AAMA) of the Evangelical Covenant Church. The retreat drew 55 participants.

Two morning sessions focusing on hindrances to worship were among retreat highlights, presented by Rev. David Jones, a Covenant pastor from the Seattle area. "The sessions were practical and deeply spiritual as he touched the hearts of many of us regarding hindrances to worship," said Rich Berry, director of urban outreach expansion for the Southeast Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

Atlanta Retreat Jane Berry and Kathleen Greenidge co-taught sessions on the minister and his family, providing practical insights on how to have better family devotions. "It has become our tradition to have a pre-retreat session on the Wednesday prior to the event," Berry said, noting that this year a dozen individuals heard Rev. Conway Boyce share about his ministry to the poor in Brooklyn, New York. "This young man is doing a great job," Berry noted.

One of the evening highlights was a worship and praise time in the church pastored by Rev. Brian Brooks. "Significant things happen when people of God come together," Berry observed. "There is unity and a commitment to each other among the members of the AAMA that is adding a great deal of momentum to recruiting and encouraging church planting and adoptions."
