Covenant Missionaries Unharmed by Typhoon
TAIWAN (August 28, 2000) - Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) missionaries and the churches with which they work were not affected by super typhoon Bilis that tore through the country last Wednesday, killing at least three people and burying others alive."Most damage occurred on the southeast coast of Taiwan near the city of Taitung," said David and Judy Dolan, ECC country coordinators for Taiwan and regional coordinators for Chinese ministries. They noted that the mountain range running north and south along the East Coast of the island usually takes the brunt of typhoons coming from easterly or southeasterly directions.
The storm destroyed power lines and forced thousands of people from their homes, according to reports from the region. The capital city of Taipei and the central area of Nantou were hard hit by the storm that carried winds as high as 200 miles per hour.
