Hodgkinson, Covenant Point, Big Winners in Triathlon

IRON RIVER, MI (August 7, 2000) - Don Hodgkinson, an attorney and a member of Ravenswood Covenant Church in Chicago, Illinois, and a former cross country and track competitor at North Park College, won the second annual Covenant Point Half Triathlon Aug. 6 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The biggest winners, however, were the kids who will participate in Covenant Point's Outdoor Education and Nature Program. More than $7,000 was raised for the program, which focuses on local school groups and nature activities during the school year.

Don Hodgkinson Hodgkinson (see accompanying photo) and eight other individuals, along with seven three-person teams, navigated a half-mile swim in Hagerman Lake, completed a 25-mile bike ride and finished a seven-mile run around the lake. He finished in 2 hours, 48 minutes, 6 seconds, edging Dave Strom of Hinsdale Covenant Church (Illinois) who was clocked in 2:48.30.

All individuals had to raise a minimum $500 entry fee while three-person teams needed to raise $1,000 per entry. The winning team consisted of former Covenant Point Adventure Island directors Renee Catronbone, Mat Klemp and Gary Gotberg, who combined for a time of 2:53.58.

Participants came from all sorts of churches, including a three-person team from Carlshend, Community Covenant Church in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and Church of the Good Shepherd in Joliet, Illinois. In fact, pastor David Green biked for his church threesome. Green and Hodgkinson are both members of the Central Conference camping board of directors.

Central Conference executive board member John Fredrickson and wife Beth, editor of the Central Conference Covenanter, participated with their 13-year old daughter, Rachel, for Milwaukee Evangelical Covenant Church in Wisconsin. Rachel, the youngest participant in the event, was among the leaders after the swimming portion.

On August 26, Covenant Harbor Bible Camp (also in the Central Conference) will host a 60-mile bike-a-thon beginning at the Holmstad Retirement Community in Batavia, Illinois, and finishing at the camp in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Money raised from the event will benefit the camper scholarship fund.
