Chinese Church Adopted in South Africa
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (June 28, 2000) - Taiwan Covenant Church, the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) Department of World Mission, and the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM) in South Africa have combined to aid in the adoption of South African Chinese Covenant Church in Johannesburg.Rev. Frank Tuan and wife, Ada, who have served SIM since 1991, met with David Dolan, the ECC's coordinator for Chinese Ministry, Rev. Franklin Chang, general secretary of the Taiwan Covenant Church, and Rev. John Guo, pastor at Taipei (Taiwan) Covenant Church to assist with the adoption process.
South African Chinese Covenant Church, which ranges from 80-100 in attendance, is the largest Chinese church in South Africa. The country has more than 100,000 Chinese, giving the ECC a wide field to harvest through the new congregation. SIM helped start the four-year-old church; however, congregations are allowed to determine their own denominational affiliation.
Although the church does not own its own building, it has raised 75 percent of funds needed to purchase or build a facility. Meanwhile, the church has already begun helping Chinese fellowships develop in other parts of South Africa.
