McDonald Receives Hawkinson Leadership Award

CHICAGO (May 23, 2000) - Linda McDonald, assistant professor of physics, has been named the recipient of North Park University's 1999-2000 Zenos Hawkinson Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award.

McDonald, who lives in Glenview, Illinois, was nominated by faculty colleagues and the NPU class of 2000 and selected by a faculty-student committee. A teacher at NPU since 1984, McDonald has aided NPU's work in her department with her expertise in experimental atomic and molecular physics, theoretical atomic and molecular physics, radiation physics and paleomagnetism.

"Professor McDonald has helped build the physics program into one of North Park's best, consistently placing graduates in the best graduate programs in the country," said Daniel deRoulet, dean of the undergraduate college at North Park. "Moreover, Professor McDonald is a master teacher and is completely unselfish with her time, applying her talents not only to courses in her major, but to general education and first-year orientation."

The Zenos Hawkinson Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award is presented annually to one professor "for nurturing students intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually; for preparation, organization, and expertise in teaching; for exhibiting the importance of Christian faith in every aspect of life; for being available to students, connecting with them, and treating them with respect; for demonstrating leadership in promoting cultural diversity and women's rights; and for exhibiting a passion for learning."

North Park University enrolls 2,300 students and was founded by the Evangelical Covenant Church in 1891.
