Junior High Jam 2K Seeks Eternal Goals

STRATHMORE, AB (May 13, 2000) - For most, ER is either a hospital term or the name of a highly-rated television show.

For those putting together a junior high camp in Canada, however, ER has to do with something far more important to one's religious faith. For them, there is far more healing help in a different ER - an Eternal Relationship with Jesus Christ.

That is the message of Junior High Jam 2K, which began today at the Covenant Bible College-Canada campus in Strathmore, Alberta, and continues through Monday. It is one of the only events of its kind for Canadian and American students from grades 7– 9. CBC has brought in one of the most experienced Covenant youth pastors to help communicate the gospel message.

Jay Bowman of Christ Community Covenant Church in Arvada, Colorado, a Covenant youth pastor for more than a dozen years, will challenge students to a deeper relationship with Christ in an energetic and effective presentation. Brian Frable, director of Ministry Arts at CBC-Canada, will be leading worship at the event. The talents of both give this year's event an added boost, which excites Junior High Jam 2K leadership.

"People travel anywhere from two miles to 1,200 miles to attend," said Junior High Jam 2K coordinator Evan Dewald. "Our conference is so spread out that just pulling off a weekend event like this is amazing," Dewald added. "The Covenant church has always done quality events focused around the spiritual being of our students and we are following God's direction, working to lead students and leaders to a deeper relationship with Christ. We are very proud to be a part of what God is doing through Junior High Jam."

One unique aspect of Jam 2K is the volunteer staff. During the last four years, high school volunteers have been put in a prominent place of service for the weekend. Like the campers, they apply to come - jobs range from the glamorous main stage activities to spending the entire weekend in the kitchen doing dishes.

"It is usually the behind-the-scenes people that make good ministry happen," said Dewald. "And this has helped senior highers see that all types of service have an important part." Dewald has appreciated the special ministry the high school students have given the junior high students, stating, "I don't know what other senior highers are like, but for ours, serving junior highers has never been real high on their list of things to do on a May weekend."
