CHIC2K On Record-Setting Track
CHICAGO (April 17, 2000) - CHIC2K, the largest high school event in the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC), is nearing 5,000 registrations for the one-week conference in Knoxville, Tennessee, according to CHIC2K executive director Marti Burger."I think God is going to make CHIC2K (known previously as Covenant High in Christ) an incredible experience," said Burger, who estimates that some 5,000 students and 1,000 adult counselors are headed to the University of Tennessee for the event. Burger added that openings are being filled on a space-available basis.
Featured speakers include Debbie Morris, co-author of the book Forgiving the Dead Man Walking. Morris was 16 years old when she and her boyfriend were abducted and brutalized by Robert Lee Willie, the individual who served as inspiration for the character portrayed by actor Sean Penn in the Academy Award-winning film Dead Man Walking.
Musical talent abounds during worship services, including nationally known "Lost and Found" and a CHIC band that has been a dynamic staple at the event for years. Drama will be incorporated into worship through the talents of Curt Cloninger, Emily Kaufman, and Stephen Waldschmidt. "The emphasis is more on worship - kids will have more time to interact not only with each other, but also with God," said Burger. Teens will have the option to participate in Arts in Worship training, with many using their vocal, dramatic reading and technical skills as part of worship teams during the week.
Participants will enjoy a host of outdoor activities, including whitewater rafting trips down the Pigeon River, bike tours in the Smoky Mountains, hiking in Smoky Mountain National Park, a minor league baseball game, a golf outing, and in-house tournaments in volleyball, basketball, and tennis. An Olympic-size swimming pool will also be available.
CHIC has been a staple in the ECC for more than four decades and will continue in 2003, albeit under a new name. A contest to rename the event is currently under way and those with suggestions for a new moniker can enter them on the CHIC web site at www.covchurch.org or through the Department of Christian Education and Discipleship, 3311 W. Foster Avenue, Chicago, IL, 60625. The new name will be announced during CHIC and the winning entry will receive a $200 pizza party or a $200 gift certificate to Covenant Bookstore.
May 15 is the deadline for the T-shirt design contest. Winners will receive a $100 shopping spree at the CHIC2K store.
