Canadian Conference Celebrates Positive Report
SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN (April, 2000) - A positive financial picture, a new bible school in South America and some noteworthy progress in local churches were reasons to smile as the Canada Conference of Evangelical Covenant Church concluded meetings at College Park Covenant Church April 6-9.
Also noteworthy was the 10-year anniversary celebration of Neil Josephson as president of Covenant Bible College (CBC), which will open its third campus in La Merced, Ecuador, this fall. A total of 85 delegates represented 22 conference churches with some 200 attending conference business meetings and 285 participating in the conference's annual banquet and celebration for Josephson, according to Canada Conference superintendent Jeff Anderson.
"The annual meeting had a really positive feel to it," said Anderson. "CBC has had a profound impact on our conference, so the celebration for Neil was great. Giving is up in the churches and people have a positive attitude about the growth taking place in churches - we're glad for that, too," Anderson continued. "The seminars we had were applicable to where our delegates happened to be. We've never had so many people attend seminars."
The Canada Conference Annual Meeting keynote speaker was Mark Novak, superintendent of the North Pacific Conference. He led a seminar on renewal in the local church. Doug Vetvick, dean of the CBC-Windsor Worship Center in Colorado, directed a seminar on worship, and Ruth Hill,
executive director of Covenant Women Ministries, facilitated a Coordinators Summit in which 60 women from 21 churches participated.
Giving to churches increased from $157,000 to $166,000 between 1998 and 1999, with the conference also experiencing an increase in attendance from 2,479 to 2,544 in 1999.
Anderson singled out the Department of Christian Education and Discipleship conference board, chaired by Patty Peterson, for its leadership. The conference's annual Junior High Jam at CBC had 180 participants, an increase over a year earlier. The 50-plus conference also had an increase in attendance.
