New Swedish Covenant Hospital CEO Announced
CHICAGO (March 21, 2000) - Mark Newton has been named president and chief executive officer of Swedish Covenant Hospital, it was announced today by Paul Peterson, president of Covenant Ministries of Benevolence. He succeeds Edward Cucci, who served as president since 1990.
Newton, who will assume his new responsibilities May 1, currently serves as senior vice president for corporate services at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare. He has held positions of senior vice president for business development at Highland Park Hospital and chief operating officer at Lakeland Health Ventures, Inc., both part of Lakeland Health Services. He previously served as senior vice president of planning and marketing at Highland Park Hospital from 1987 to 1996.
"We are very pleased that Mr. Newton has agreed to take on this leadership role at Swedish Covenant Hospital," Peterson said. "The background and experience he brings to the position will surely benefit the hospital as it continues its mission of serving the community by implementing the latest technology in a highly professional and caring manner," Peterson added.
Newton has extensive experience in physician relations, community outreach, business development, joint ventures, electronic commerce, managed care and marketing, Peterson noted. He also serves as an instructor at North Park University, where he conducts undergraduate courses in marketing and graduate courses in healthcare. He and his family reside in the Edgebrook community of Chicago.
A Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Newton has a Master of Management degree from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree, summa cum laude, with a concentration in economics and business administration from North Park College.
Swedish Covenant Hospital has been serving the healthcare needs of the city's north and northwest sides for 114 years. Open heart surgery is scheduled to be added to the list of services this summer.
