Covenant World Relief Aids Mozambique

MOZAMBIQUE (February 29, 2000) - Covenant World Relief has designated $15,000 of its disaster fund funds to respond to the difficult flooding situation in Mozambique.

"For several years we have worked with our World Relief partners in Mozambique," said Tim Ek, director of Covenant World Relief. He said efforts have included helping to support a very effective Community Bank program, assisting young mothers in literacy programs, providing child wellness programs, and sponsoring a very successful public health initiative.

Recent estimates place the number of homeless at about 200,000 individuals. Many of them are in the region around Chokwe, a city about 125 miles north of Maputo. "This is the region where we have been very involved," Ek said. "Three years ago, the Covenant World Relief video focused on the programs in this area," he continued. "Covenanters are encouraged to pray for our friends who have been effected in this area. We will continue to monitor the situation to see how we can be of further support in the days ahead."

Covenanters desiring to contribute should send gifts to Covenant World Relief, 5101 N. Francisco Ave., Chicago, IL, 60625. Gifts should be designated for Mozambique flood and disaster relief.
