Candidates Sought for Covenant Boards

CHICAGO (February, 2000) - The Board of Human Resources (BHR) is seeking recommendations for potential candidates for positions on various boards of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

The board seeks individuals who are "worthy leaders and servants who may influence the Covenant through their journey of faith, expertise, sense of humor, gender, experience, personality, ethnic background, and by their desire to challenge and improve the denomination," said Liz Mosbo VerHage, BHR coordinator. Candidates must be associated with a Covenant church in some capacity.

The 12-member board, nominated by regional conferences, reviews all nominations and contacts individual nominees throughout the year. The board works closely with the Covenant's Council of Administrators, reports directly to the Covenant Annual Meeting, and is administered through the office of the president.

Following is a list of boards and a brief description of primary responsibilities for each:

  • Executive Board: requires responsible and dedicated members with previous board experience; works closely with the president.
  • Christian Education and Discipleship: involved in resource development, events planning, and sponsors ministries for children, youth, and families; seeks individuals with backgrounds in education, a willingness to network with churches, and those involved in new church plants.
  • Church Growth and Evangelism: responsible for prayer ministries, new church development, ethnic initiatives, and evangelism programs; needs wide range of skilled servants.
  • Board of Communication: administers the communications strategy for the denomination, including publication, sale, and distribution of books and periodicals (including The Covenant Companion and Covenant Home Altar) and direction of Internet services; currently seeking candidates with experience in art/graphic design, as well as sales and marketing.
  • Covenant Women Ministries: provides direction and resourcing to women's' organizations in Covenant churches; seeks passionate women to lead and support these programs.
  • Board of Human Resources: (see earlier description).
  • Board of the Ministry: supervises procedures of ordination, licensure, and chaplain endorsement; administers discipline and provides guidance; needs ordained persons to represent the needs of ministers.
  • Pensions: manages pension policies and group insurance; seeks those involved with investments, budgeting, compensation issues, and individuals who are themselves pension recipients.
  • World Mission: establishes policies, provides supervision, and support of approximately 160 missionaries in nine countries; desires visionary individuals who are involved with or passionate about mission.
  • Benevolence: operates retirement/healthcare facilities and numerous supportive care and hospital facilities; desires people with healthcare, business, and investment backgrounds.
  • North Park University Board of Trustees: members establish institutional policies, strategic plans, create financial support and evaluate the president; desires supportive individuals from a wide range of experiences who are able to head committees and execute initiatives.
