Johnson Elected Pacific Southwest Superintendent
MISSION SPRINGS (January 15, 2000) - Evelyn M.R. Johnson was elected superintendent of the Pacific Southwest Conference at a meeting of conference delegates today. Johnson becomes the first woman to be elected superintendent in the history of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
Johnson, who succeeds retiring Supt. John Notehelfer, will interview with the Board of Ministry on January 30 and is expected to begin her duties March 15, following approval of her ordination. Plans call for her to be installed by the conference at its annual meeting in April and officially installed by the Evangelical Covenant Church during the 115th Annual Meeting in St. Paul in June. Notehelfer will serve in a consulting role until the end of May.
The 157 delegates participating in today's session represented a good cross-section of the conference, said Cathy Barsotti, who addressed the conference and reviewed the selection process. The conference board chair moderated the session, with some 50 churches represented. Jim Gustafson, executive director of World Mission, led the group in worship. Following remarks by Johnson, Notehelfer led in a time of prayer and anointing.
Johnson, formerly executive director of the ECC's Department of Christian Education and Discipleship, was selected by the conference search committee following a 15-month search process. She has been serving on the staff of Peninsula Covenant Church in Redwood City, CA.
