Congo Hospitals Need Sutures
KARAWA, CONGO (October 20, 1999) - Hospitals in Karawa, Loko and Wasolo are in desperate need of surgical sutures, according to a report from the Central Pharmacy serving those institutions.
That word came from Congo church leaders following a recent meeting in Bangui, Central African Republic, where they met with missionaries and mission leaders, including representatives from the Evangelical Covenant Church World Mission department.
"The stories they (church leaders) told of their situation were horrendous," said one observer at the meeting. "The need to pray for the church continues."
Lacking a supply of sutures, the hospitals often have had to use sewing thread and nylon fishing line purchased at local markets, the pharmacy reported. Following is a more precise list of desired sutures:
- Absorbable sutures: sizes 0, 1, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 taper + 4/0 cutting.
- Non-absorbable sutures: sizes 2/0, 3/0 taper and 4/0, 5/0
cutting.
As hundreds of sutures are used each month, the need is described as urgent. Sutures removed from their outer wrapping, but still intact, can be used. Those desiring to donate sutures of the sizes described above are asked to send them to Barbara Johnson, World Mission Department, 5101 N. Francisco Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, 60625.
