Covenantors Escape Injury in Oaxaca Earthquake
OAXACA, MEXICO (September 30, 1999) - An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck the southern state of Oaxaca at 11:30 a.m. local time today. Covenant missionaries Nancy Jo Hoover, Kristin Caarlsgard and Donna Larson, along with the pastors and members of the 33 Covenant churches in Oaxaca appear to have escaped harm, according to missionary Wendy Mark. At least seven people in the state of Oaxaca were killed, according news sources.
"There are no casualties, only some minor damage such as cracks in walls," Mark reported in an e-mail message to Covenant News Service. "As of this time, all missionaries, Mexican Covenanters, and churches are okay," Mark said.
Mark said a falling wall crushed several cars in Puebla, where missionaries Jerry and Vicky Love are stationed, but no one was injured. There are reports of collapsed houses in Oaxaca, but Mark had no news concerning injuries. Additional information will be posted on this website as soon as it is available.
