Sallman Book Signings Scheduled
CHICAGO (June, 1999) - Dr. Jack R. Lundbom, author of a new book focusing on the work of Chicago-based artist Warner E. Sallman, will attend two Chicago-area book signings in June. Lundbom, an ordained Covenant minister and a professor of religious studies, is the author of several books, including his most recent, "Jeremiah 1-20," in the Anchor Bible Series.
"Master Painter: Warner E. Sallman" is a fascinating story of a gifted man with humble beginnings who overcame disappointment, ill health, and personal limitations to live out a vision that his art "serve not only the enjoyment of humankind, but also the practical end of instructing persons in the way of God."
As Lundbom points out, Sallman's lack of notoriety in professional art circles can be explained by the fact that he made little or no attempt to put himself forward as a Chicago, or even a Swedish-American artist. Sallman had no exhibitions of his work, and his public life consisted largely of appearances before church and community groups to do chalk drawings.
"The time has come," Lundbom said, "for a broader public to know the man who stands behind the paintings and other artwork bearing the Sallman signature." One highlight of the book is an extensive index of Sallman's works, including brief descriptions and current locations.
Lundbom will appear at Covenant Bookstore, 3200 Foster Avenue, Chicago, from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday, June 26, to sign copies and answer questions on his new book. He also will make appearances in Northbrook, Illinois, and at the 114th Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Green Lake, Wisconsin, on Thursday, June 24, from 2 until 4 p.m. Books may be ordered through Covenant Bookstore by calling toll-free 800-621-1290.
