Missionaries Escape Earthquake Devastation

MEXICO CITY (June, 1999) - There have been no reports of serious injury or significant property damage affecting Covenant missionaries following an earthquake Tuesday, according to the World Mission Department of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

The earthquake, which struck an area about five miles southwest of Mexico City, measured 6.5 on the Richter scale. The epicenter reportedly was in Huajuapan de Leon, Oaxaca.

"The missionaries in Puebla (the Loves), Cuernavaca (the Petersons), and Mexico City (the Kellys, Marks, Leanders, and Annie Jones) are all fine," reports David Mark, World Mission regional coordinator to Latin America. Mark said the earthquake has had no apparent effect on the status of Popocatepeti, the 19,500-foot-high volcano located between Mexico City and Puebla.
