Services Held for Dr. Jorge J. Taylor
COSTA RICA (January, 1999) - Dr. Jorge J. Taylor, well-known throughout the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) as a pastor, teacher and founding president of CHET in Los Angeles, was buried January 30 in San Jose, Costa Rica. He died January 26, one day following heart surgery, having suffered a mild heart attack.
A member of the ECC Executive Board, Taylor and his wife, Miriam, had moved to San Jose following his retirement in 1997 from Fuller Theological Seminary in Los Angeles, to be closer to his wife's family. He was a native of Panama City, Panama. Before joining Fuller to work in the area of multi-cultural affairs, Taylor was senior pastor of Iglesia del Pacto Evangelico Church in Los Angeles and president of Centro de Estudios Teologicos del Pacto (CHET).
"When the Covenant made a commitment to the education of Hispanic pastors, we turned to Jorge for direction and leadership," said Dr. Robert K. Johnston, professor of Theology and Culture at Fuller Theological Seminary and former dean of North Park Theological Seminary. "He was willing to leave a tenured position at Northern Baptist Seminary and join in our adventure," Johnston said. "His leadership, pastoral sensitivity, church loyalty and educational expertise were instrumental in helping us to develop CHET and to strengthen our Covenant's commitment to Hispanic ministry. Jorge will be greatly missed. He was a close friend and colleague whose advice I treasured," Johnston said.
Taylor received his Diploma in Theology from Latin America Bible Seminary in San Jose in 1954. He received his bachelor's degree from Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington, and a master's degree in pastoral counseling from Michigan State University. He completed doctoral studies in counseling at Michigan State University in 1964. He later completed post-doctoral studies in marriage and family counseling at Fuller Theological Seminary's Graduate School of Psychology.
Condolences may be sent to his wife, Miriam, at Apartado 1235-1011, Y Griega, Costa Rica, Central America.
