SANKOFA JOURNEY for Women

Race, racism, and racialization weigh heavily on our nation and on the conscience of evangelicals. Evangelicals believe that being reconciled to God and reconciled with our neighbor are both major responsibilities and opportunities of our faith (2 Corinthians 5:18).
Then why is it so difficult to establish and maintain a close, trusting relationship with people of Color? Why is it so difficult to share power and privilege with people of Color?

Sankofa is West African for "looking backward to move forward." We must look backward to move forward to begin to address racial righteousness. A Sankofa Journey increases one's awareness, understanding and sensitivity for:

It allows us opportunity to consider how each participant might better address racist oppression in our church, our community and city, our nation, and our world.

What is it?

Among options of sites visited on the Journey:

a. Birmingham Civil Rights Museum
b. Kelly Ingram Park, a memorial to children who fought off dogs and water cannons of injustice
c. 16th Street Baptist Church, site where 4 girls were murdered
d. Martin Luther King Memorial in Atlanta
e. SW Georgia Prison and Jail project
f. Covenant works in Atlanta, GA and Gary IN

COORDINATORS SUMMIT

The Coordinators Summits, leadership training for leaders of women ministries, were launched in April 2000. By June of 2001, every Conference and Region had hosted a Summit. Emphasis now is on regional Summits within the Conferences.
Feedback from the Summits clearly indicates that the Coordinators Summits are providing what local leaders of women ministries have long desired: training and networking. It is hoped that this training will rekindle a passion to advance God's kingdom through women locally, regionally, denominationally and internationally.

The Coordinators Summit is a six-hour leadership training seminar created to give leaders in women ministries the tools to design diversified ministries appropriate for their ministry context. The first session address the leader herself and then outlines steps for determining one's vision and mission statements The second session covers the ABC's of Women Ministries and is the heart of the Summit.

The third and last session teaches how to strengthen your leadership team.
If you would like to host a Coordinators Summit in your area, contact your Conference Women Ministries President through your church or contact the Women Ministries Office (773-907-3332; wmc@covchurch.org).

If you have arranged a Summit and would like it posted here, email us at wmc@covchurch.org and we'll add your information.
We long for everyone involved in women ministry leadership to gain this important training. If you would like to host a Summit, contact your Conference Women Ministries President (contact information posted on Calendar & Contacts page).
